In early 1994, Thomas R. Nicely, a mathematics professor, discovered something unusual while studying prime numbers. His research required a computer to solve millions of complex division problems. Because computers are designed to be extremely accurate, he expected every answer to be correct.
Most of the time they were; but occasionally they were not.
When an error occurred, it was tiny, usually only about 0.01%. Most people would never have noticed or cared. But to scientists, engineers, and mathematicians, even the smallest error can have serious consequences. If you’re designing an airplane or conducting advanced scientific research, a tiny mistake can multiply as calculations build upon one another. A bathroom scale that’s off by an ounce may not matter, but for a pharmacist measuring medication, that same error could be the difference between life and death.
Rather than assuming he had made a mistake, Nicely carefully checked his work again and again. After months of investigation, he discovered the problem wasn’t with his calculations, it was with Intel’s new Pentium computer chip.
To make calculations faster, the chip relied on a small lookup table. During its design, five values had accidentally been omitted. Those missing values caused the processor to produce incorrect answers under certain conditions.
Nicely contacted Intel and explained his findings, but the company initially dismissed his concerns. Determined, he shared his research with other scientists and published his results. Intel eventually acknowledged the flaw but argued that the error was so rare that most customers did not need a replacement. Many customers disagreed. They believed that a computer should always produce the correct answer, no matter how small the error.
Public pressure mounted, and Intel reversed its decision. The company replaced the faulty Pentium processors at a cost of approximately $475 million, one of the largest hardware recalls in computing history.
Thomas Nicely never intended to embarrass Intel or even create controversy. He simply wanted to find the truth. Instead of ignoring something that didn’t seem right, he investigated it thoroughly and had the courage to speak up.
Doing the right thing is not always easy. Sometimes it means questioning what everyone else assumes is true. Each of us will face moments when we recognize that something isn’t right. Whether it’s an error that needs correcting, unfair treatment, a safety concern, or someone in need of help, we all have opportunities to speak up and make a positive difference.
